Scotland travel: Culzean Castle barnacles on the seashore Scotland travel: Living seashells? Barnacles? More views of the cliffside Culzean ("Cull-ane") Castle, and a walk into a cave. Very dark and dripping, a flashlight would be essential for any further exploration. Without a light, it's easy to comprehend how pirates or smugglers could have used these caves for storing contraband. (1:52) Send this video to a friend. Leave/View Comments |

Scotland travel: Culzean Castle top floor Scotland travel: The top floor of Culzean Castle is where the Eisenhower apartments are located. This view was the only unique item offered to guests of the castle. No photography and no videos were allowed in the main section of the castle, nor was independent after-hours exploration allowed off the top floor of the castle, despite our 'guest' status. So after driving a long way to this delightfully isolated coastal castle and spending almost $2,000 per night (900 pounds) for 3 of the 6 rooms of Culzean Castle, we found there were few other "perks" for castle guests other than this view. It was with great regret that we decided not to stay the last two nights of our booking. It was with even greater regret that we found the rule "cancel by 6:00pm the day of your booking to avoid penalty" did not apply at Culzean Castle. We were accustomed to that rule from, well, every other hotel/castle/resort that we have ever stayed at. We feel this stiff penalty bears mention somewhere on their web site. We paid the 100 pound per room per night penalty, for a total of 600 pounds, or more than $1300, to *NOT* stay at Culzean Castle for two nights. This could have been avoided if we knew in advance that there would be no independent exploration of the castle, no photography, no videos, and that the staff would barely be out of adolescence. When the "Castle Steward" has never spent a night in a hotel as a guest himself, the 'adequate' level of service is understandable. Five star hotel prices ought to come with five star hotel service. This Castle and surrounding environment is the stuff that fairy tales are made of, but we couldn't touch the fantasy, we couldn't live the dream. Ultimately, this castle experience should not be missed, but can be entirely relegated to a very acceptable "day trip" status. Still, we remain (1:58) Send this video to a friend. Scotland travel: Culzean Castle entrance Scotland travel: Culzean Castle has quite an entrance way! You can imagine Royalty driving up to this gate in their horse-drawn carriage and getting an imposing first view. Here we see Culzean ("Cull-ane") Castle framed in it's own main gateway, and we see how castle keep guards would have kept warm inside the guard tower. (2:19) Send this video to a friend.
