Used as an armory and a prison, it must have been attacked from the sea only at high tide, as these pleasure boats stuck in the bog demonstrate. Blackness Castle didn't look like much from the outside, and was very stark in it's functionality on the inside. A very impregnable design, which may explain why Blackness Castle still stands! In fact, of all the castles we visited on our trip to Scotland, this was the only one that had no current scaffolding. Neither Oliver Cromwell's army or the ravages of time could conquer Blackness Castle!
