Scotland travel: Blackness Castle Scotland travel: Blackness Castle
Scotland travel: Blackness Castle. Used as an armory and a prison, it must have been attacked from the sea only at high tide, as these pleasure boats stuck in the bog demonstrate. Blackness Castle didn't look like much from the outside, and was very stark in it's functionality on the inside. This Castle is about an hour drive from where we stayed at Dalhousie Castle, and about two hours from Culzean Castle. (2:25)

Scotland travel: On the guard wall of Blackness Castle, we see another view demonstrating how an attack from sea must have been at high tide, unless the attacking navy's guns had tremendous range. Blackness Castle is about an hour drive from where we stayed at Dalhousie Castle, and about two hours from Culzean Castle. (2:39)

Scotland travel: Blackness Castle spur defense system Scotland travel: Blackness Castle spur defense system
Scotland travel: Here's some views of where the guards on the wall walked in Blackness Castle, and the "spur defense" system. A very impregnable design, which may explain why Blackness Castle still stands! In fact, of all the castles we visited on our trip to Scotland, this was the only one that had no current scaffolding. Neither Oliver Cromwell's army or the ravages of time could conquer Blackness Castle! Blackness Castle is about an hour drive from where we stayed at Dalhousie Castle, and about two hours from Culzean Castle. (1:45)
